About Salary ↔ Hourly Converter

Salary ↔ Hourly Converter goes both directions between an annual salary and an hourly rate. It is the tool you reach for when negotiating a contract rate against a salaried offer, when a job ad quotes one but you think in the other, or when comparing a freelance hourly to the full-time equivalent at a previous role.

Worked example: an $80,000 salary at 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year converts to about $38.46 an hour. Going the other way, a $50 hourly rate at the same schedule is roughly $104,000 a year. Adjust the hours per week (32-hour weeks, the 35-hour norm in some European countries, longer startup weeks) and the weeks per year (factor out unpaid leave by lowering from 52) and the conversion updates.

An important caveat: contractor hourly rates and salaried compensation are not directly comparable as gross figures. A salary usually includes employer-paid taxes, health insurance, retirement contributions, paid time off, sick days, and equipment — together those can add 25–40% on top of the headline number for a salaried role. A self-employed contractor typically pays all of that out of the hourly rate. As a rough rule of thumb, a contractor hourly that yields the same take-home as a $X salary is around $X × 1.3 ÷ (hours × weeks). Use the calculator for the apples-to-apples gross conversion, then layer benefits and taxes on top.

All figures stay in your browser. Salary and rate negotiations are sensitive; nothing is uploaded or logged.
