About VAT / Sales Tax Calculator
VAT / Sales Tax Calculator adds tax to a net amount or extracts the tax already included in a tax-inclusive total. Either direction returns the net, the tax, and the gross — covering the two situations that actually come up: pricing something you sell ('what do I charge to net X?'), and parsing a receipt or invoice ('how much of this total was tax?').
Worked example: a £100 net price at 20% VAT becomes £120 gross — the 'add tax' direction. Going the other way, a £120 gross price at 20% VAT decomposes into £100 net and £20 tax. Note that the extracted tax is not 20% of the gross — that would be £24, which is wrong. The correct reverse-mode formula is gross ÷ (1 + rate); getting that backwards is the most common manual mistake.
Set the rate to whatever applies in your jurisdiction. Common ones: 20% VAT in the UK, 19% in Germany, 21% in the Netherlands, 25% in Sweden and Denmark, 5% federal GST in Canada (plus provincial sales tax), 10% GST in Australia. Many countries also have reduced rates for food, books, or hospitality. The US is different: there is no federal sales tax, and combined state-plus-local rates vary widely — a dedicated Sales Tax Calculator covers the US case with the same math under a different label.
Calculations run entirely in your browser. Pricing scenarios and invoice values are never uploaded or logged.
